No. 14 SOU completes weekend sweep against C of I

ASHLAND – The Southern Oregon University volleyball team showed minimal signs of an emotional hangover Saturday evening at Riehm Arena in its 25-21, 25-23, 21-25, 25-23 win against College of Idaho.

A night after upsetting 11th-ranked Eastern Oregon in five, the No. 14 Raiders (12-3 overall, 6-1 Cascade Conference) completed the weekend sweep by turning back the preseason conference favorite. Lauren McGowne (Coos Bay, Ore./Marshfield) served up 46 assists to get four of her teammates in double-digit kills.

Motade Atanda (San Jose, Calif./Presentation) was responsible for 17 kills and 11 digs, Paulla Pinheiro (Fortaleza, Brazil/Colegio Farias Brito) had 15 and 10, and Sam Boehnke (Ashland, Ore./Ashland) and Emma Gasman (Clovis, Calif./Buchanan) went for 10 kills apiece.

The Yotes (8-8, 5-2), who were on the verge of forcing a fifth set with an 18-11 advantage in the fourth, were led by Katy Robinson (13 kills), Emily Ottinger (11 kills) and Kylie Porter (10 kills), but were stymied at a .162 hitting average. Sierra Porter had 36 assists, nine digs and seven kills.

Only one Raider opponent this season has managed to hit over .200.

The Raiders ended the match on a 14-6 run, getting three kills apiece from Atanda and Pinheiro, and took six of the last seven points. Gasman's fourth service ace of the night and a C of I ballhandling error accounted for the final points.

"This was a really nice weekend for us in terms of mental toughness," Raiders coach Josh Rohlfing said. "We showed a lot of resilience. Basically any emotion you can think of, I thought we handled with flying colors."

SOU took over in the first when Pinheiro, with the Raiders leading 16-14, served them to four straight points, and Gasman later added consecutive aces to make it 23-19. SOU then trailed 17-13 in the third until two Pinheiro aces triggered a 16-6 stretch.

Brookelynn Cole (Portland, Ore./Central Catholic) kept the Raiders solid in the back row with 24 digs, while Gasman had one solo and five assisted blocks and Abbie Hanser (Billings, Mont./Billings Central Catholic) got in on five.

Kilee Lopez led C of I with 15 digs and Sierra Porter was in on five blocks.

"We were really fortunate to get by both of these teams this weekend," Rohlfing said, "and we're well aware of how tough it's going to be to play them at their places."

The Raiders will be on the road for the next three weeks, traveling first to Northwest University next Friday and Evergreen State on Saturday.
