Raiders shut down Eastern Oregon for 75-56 win and road split

LA GRANDE – The 10th-ranked Southern Oregon men's basketball team shot 57 percent and kept the Cascade Conference's second- and third-leading scorers 26 points below their combined average, earning a key road split with a 75-56 win over Eastern Oregon on Saturday night at Quinn Coliseum.

Eric Thompson (Roseburg, Ore./Roseburg) totaled 22 points and eight rebounds for the Raiders, who improved to 18-4 overall and 8-3 in conference play with five of their last seven regular-season games to be played at home.

Thompson went 8-for-13 from the field, Jordan West (Gymea Bay, Australia/Port Hacking) went 6-for-10 with 13 points and seven boards and Ben DeSaulnier (Philomath, Ore./Philomath) went 5-for-7 with 14. Tim Weber (Roseburg, Ore./Roseburg) logged 11 points, six rebounds and three assists, and sunk the dagger 3-pointer that gave the Raiders their largest lead, 60-46, with 5:45 to play.

One possession later, Weber found DeSaulnier for a triple that made it 63-48.

The Mountaineers (12-9, 4-7) were led by Case Rada, who connected on six 3-pointers for 26 points. Their leading scorers, Bryan McGriff and De'Sean Mattox, were limited to a total of 15 points on 6-for-24 shooting.

In SOU's 114-104 overtime win over the Mountaineers on Dec. 19 in Ashland, Mattox scored 42 points and McGriff had 31. EOU also shot 48 percent as a team in that contest but just 38 percent on Saturday.

The Raiders have won five straight against EOU, including three straight in La Grande by an average margin of 20 points.

Trailing 22-20 midway through the first half, the Raiders compiled a 12-0 run started by a Thompson jumper and capped by a DeSaulnier 3-pointer and never trailed again. They led 38-33 at halftime and scored the first six points of the second with baskets on their first three possessions.

SOU went 26-for-46 as a team, eclipsing 55 percent from the field for the fourth time in five games.

The Raiders will return to Riehm Arena, where they are 7-0 this season, next Friday and Saturday for games against Corban and Northwest Christian. Both are scheduled to tip off at 7:30 p.m.
