Raiders rally from 15 down to escape Corban with 69-66 victory

SALEM – Leaving behind 33 minutes of ugly basketball, the 16th-ranked Southern Oregon men rallied to erase what was once a 15-point second-half deficit and escape Corban with a 69-66 win Saturday night at the C.E. Jeffers Center.

Eric Thompson (Roseburg, Ore./Roseburg) scored 20 points and netted the go-ahead 3-pointer with one minute remaining, swinging the lead to the Raiders (14-3 overall, 4-2 Cascade Conference) for the first time since it was 1-0.

The Warriors (9-5, 2-3) led 61-51 before Jordan West (Gymea Bay, Australia/Port Hacking)'s layup ignited a 9-0 Raider run with 6:30 remaining. West hit two free throws on SOU's next possession, freshman Kenny Meyer (Sparks, Nev./Spanish Springs) drained a straight-on triple on the possession after that, and Tim Weber (Roseburg, Ore./Roseburg) capped the run two minutes after it started with a bucket that trimmed Corban's edge to 61-60.

SOU had to keep fighting uphill. Caleb Herzberg's fifth 3-pointer of the night put Corban right back up by four, and it took Joel Spear (Adelaide, Australia/St. Michaels)'s steal that led to two Meyer free throws to get it back to two with 2:31 left. SOU got a stop, and Thompson's missed 3-pointer was rebounded by West, who put it up to finally tie the game with 1:46 on the clock.

The Warriors answered again, this time with an AJ Monterossi layup, but Thompson got another look from the right wing on SOU's ensuing trip and cashed in with his fourth triple for a 67-66 Raider lead.

Cyrus Ward then missed a jumper for Corban, and Meyer iced two free throws with 17 seconds left. Monterossi had the potential game-tying look with three seconds left but was off on his contested 3-point attempt.

West went 6-for-8 with 15 points, four rebounds and two steals. Weber contributed nine points, six assists, four rebounds, two steals and two blocks, while Meyer's key points landed him a career-high eight. Spear and Ben DeSaulnier (Philomath, Ore./Philomath) added seven points apiece.

SOU, which was coming off Friday's last-second loss at Northwest Christian, was sluggish against Corban's zone defense in the first half and went 9-for-23 from the field. They cracked it in the second, going 14-for-24.

Conversely, Corban went 6-for-12 from deep in the first half but shot 32 percent (9-for-28) overall in the second. Jordan Carter led the way with 20 points, going 4-for-5 from outside.

The Warriors led 43-28 one minute into the second frame. Thompson attempted to navigate SOU through its offensive woes when his back-to-back 3s got the Raiders to within five points with 14:39 left, but Corban was back up by 10 two minutes later.

Northwest Christian stands in first place at 4-1 in the CCC, while SOU and College of Idaho (which escaped with two last-minute wins this weekend) are tied in second at 4-2.

The Raiders are back at Riehm Arena next Friday against Evergreen State and Saturday against Northwest University for two tilts that will begin at 7:30 p.m.
