No. 16 SOU wears down Evergreen for 77-56 triumph

ASHLAND Kristen Schoenherr (Rainier, Wash./Rainier) scored 10 of her 15 points in the first half and the 16th-ranked Southern Oregon women's basketball team protected its lead in the second, defeating Evergreen State 77-56 on Friday night at Riehm Arena.

The 16th-ranked Raiders (14-2 overall, 5-2 Cascade Conference) held Evergreen (8-5, 2-4) to 36-percent shooting, including a 9-for-33 showing after halftime.

The Raiders had their way against the undersized and undermanned Geoducks (8-5, 2-4) with a 38-22 advantage in the paint and a 24-4 advantage off the bench. SOU's three posts all were all effective – Courtney West (Sydney, Australia/Port Hacking) (12 points, 10 rebounds), Carly Mesiter (12 points, nine rebounds) and Alexi Smith (Bakersfield, Calif./Stockdale) (nine points, three rebounds).

Sadee Jones's 18 points and eight rebounds led Evergreen. LaNiece Weatherspoon had 11 points, five rebounds and three steals.

The Geoducks kept it close in the first half, battling back from a 35-22 disadvantage to cut it to 40-35 with three straight made jumpers by Randi Boseman, Boseman again and Uriah Thomas. The Raiders ended the half with buckets from Schoenherr and Meister, however, and the game never got any closer.

Schoenherr's 3-pointer got the Raiders back up by 13 before Tiani Bradford (Oregon City, Ore./Oregon City) scored inside to make it 59-44 with 11:17 left.

SOU's bench was especially useful in building up the lead, as Bradford dished out five assists in the second half and West went 5-for-5 from the field with eight rebounds.

Autumn Durand (Onalaska, Wash./Onalaska) was solid again with eight points, eight rebounds and four assists.

The Raiders have allowed 56 and 57 points in their last two games after allowing an average of 81.3 in the previous three.

SOU – which is alone in second place, one game behind Eastern Oregon – has won four straight against Evergreen and will welcome Northwest (Wash.) to town for a 5:30 game on Saturday night. The Eagles dropped a 61-58 decision Friday at Oregon Tech.
