Yotes end SOU's streak at 15 with four-set upset

CALDWELL, Idaho – The Southern Oregon volleyball team's season is no longer perfect, and its win streak at College of Idaho is no longer active.

C of I's Kylie Porter had 16 kills without an error, leading to the best hitting night of the season for an SOU opponent and a couple of lopsided sets as the Coyotes pulled off a 17-25, 25-17, 25-18, 25-23 upset of the eighth-ranked Raiders on Friday night at the J.A. Albertson Activities Center.

SOU (15-1 overall, 8-1 CCC) will need an upset of its own Saturday at No. 7 Eastern Oregon to come away with a weekend split. The Yotes (9-8, 7-2) will go for their sixth straight win against Oregon Tech.

The Raiders started Friday with one of their sharpest sets of the season – a 19-kill, three-error effort for a .533 attacking average with five kills by Corynn Kopra and four apiece from Tyana Andrews and Niki Small. Kopra was bottled up for the rest of the match, finishing with 10 kills but nine attacking errors, and SOU's attack had dropped to .204 by match's end.

Emma Gasman did her part to keep it that high, recording 13 kills on 22 attacks and four blocks. Andrews had 13 kills and seven digs, Small had eight kills and three blocks, and Lauren McGowne tallied 46 assists and seven digs.

But there was no stopping the Yotes, who at .278 became the first team to attack over .200 against SOU in 15 matches. Randi Sturtz chipped in 14 kills, Katy Robinson had 11 and Abby Fenton added 10, while All-American Sierra Porter ran the show with 50 assists.

SOU trailed the second set 6-0 and never got back into it, and the door was closed early in the third when C of I six straight to go up 12-3.

The fourth frame was easily the most competitive, featuring 12 ties and nine lead changes. The last of those occurred when a Fenton kill and an SOU error put C of I up 23-22. Porter then delivered an ace and, following her service error, Sturtz ended the match with a kill.

The Raiders had won their last two against C of I in Caldwell, both in five sets.
