Gasman, Raiders turn it on to top Tech in 4

ASHLAND Emma Gasman's takeover of Tuesday night's match went unanswered by Oregon Tech and set up a gigantic weekend for the 14th-ranked Southern Oregon volleyball team.

OIT caused early problems for the Raiders for the second time this season, but they flipped a switch behind Gasman's 15 kills on 19 attacks and five total blocks to rally for a 19-25, 25-15, 25-7, 25-22 victory at Bob Riehm Arena.

The Raiders (21-2 overall, 14-2 Cascade Conference) will host 10th-ranked Eastern Oregon at 7 p.m. Friday with an opportunity to force a first-place tie. College of Idaho, which is one loss behind SOU in third place, will visit at 5 p.m. Saturday.

The Owls (13-9, 8-8) – who have now dropped 26 straight meetings with the Raiders but had taken the last three to five sets – positioned themselves to spoil SOU's week when Kelsey Sampson and Bailey Nelson dropped four kills apiece to lead them to a .393 attacking average in the first set. In subsequent frames, however, that average sunk to .128, negative-.111 then .190.

The Raiders sharpened to a .297 attack in the second set, then dominated the third with a .591 clip and a perfect sideout percentage (8-for-8), leading 20-4 at one point.

"OIT came out ready to go and looked like a playoff-caliber team," SOU head coach Josh Rohlfing said. "I felt like we came out a little flat but raised our level in the second set and started to really push and put them on their heels. That created a lot of opportunities for us to be on the attack."

Three other Raiders joined Gasman in double-figure kills: Corynn Kopra (12), Tyana Andrews (11) and Laura Morse (11). Ashlynn Flynn was sturdy in the back row with 24 digs, while Andrews chipped in 11 and Kopra and Morse had eight apiece.

Lauren McGowne, the CCC's assist leader, had 51 more with six digs.

Gasman, who is No. 2 in the CCC in attacking average, in her last five matches has attacked at averages of .438, .526, .615, .818 and .685 with 55 kills in that span.

Sampson's 11 kills and Mykala Rubey's nine led the Owls. Waverly Green and Tori Porter combined for 27 assists, and Brooke Molloy had 17 digs.

SOU has won six straight since being swept by EOU and C of I on the road.
