Bassett lifts SOU in shutout of Eastern Oregon

ASHLAND – The Southern Oregon University men's soccer needed a spark Saturday night to break up a stalemate with Eastern Oregon at Raider Stadium, and unsurprisingly it was a freshman who delivered one.

In a meeting of first-year Cascade Conference programs, Kirk Bassett lofted a 20-yard shot that found the back of the net in the 57th minute to give the Raiders a 1-0 win against the Mountaineers and a weekend split.

SOU improved to 9-4 overall and 4-4 in the CCC, while EOU went to 2-6 and 1-5.

The difference for the Raiders, at least offensively, has been the work of youngsters such as Bassett, a product of South Eugene High. With his score, 27 of their 33 goals have been produced by freshman. And with Brendan Allen's help on the play, so have 17 of their 23 assists.

After limited action on both sides during the first half, Allen received a pass on a breakaway and had plenty of momentum but little daylight. He was tripped up while trying to get his shot off, but the ball found Bassett, who kicked as drawn-out EOU keeper Alfredo Lara retreated back to his post. Bassett's shot arrived at its destination before a leaping Lara did.

Bassett is up to three goals this season, and the assist was Allen's second.

All five of the Mountaineers' conference losses have been decided by one goal.

Making his fourth start of the season, SOU keeper Jonathan Morales recorded his third shutout by making four saves.

One of those, with 12 minutes remaining, represented EOU's best chance to score. Morales had possession of the ball but made an errant pass that went to EOU's Christopher Gianadrea, and Morales had to block Gianadrea's shot while standing nearly 10 yards away from his regular position.

The Mountaineers had a 12-7 advantage in shots, but SOU had a 5-4 advantage in shots on goal.

The Raiders are now 3-1 at home. They'll play three of their final five CCC games on the road, though, starting next week at Evergreen State and Northwest (Wash.).
