Raiders beat up Bears on the ground for 56-10 win

BILLINGS, Mont. – Rocky Mountain on Saturday afternoon became the latest opponent to get exposed to the top-ranked Southern Oregon University football team's evolving brand of dominance.

The Raiders' seventh consecutive Frontier Conference win, 56-10, was the product of a dominant rushing attack that netted 365 yards and a stout defensive effort that allowed 210 total yards and just 3.1 yards per play.

As a result, SOU (7-1 overall, 7-1 conference) gets to host 10th-ranked Montana Tech (7-1, 7-1) at noon next Saturday at Raider Stadium in a clash that will break a first-place tie in the conference. In their penultimate game of the regular season Saturday, the Orediggers defeated Eastern Oregon, 42-24.

Despite the absence of Sean Tow, who'd rushed for six touchdowns in the previous four weeks, the Raiders still managed the fourth-most rushing yards in program history with six rushing TDs and seven yards per try against the Bears. Four individuals had at least 70 yards: Keegan Lawrence (11 carries, 100 yards, two TDs), Tanner Trosin (12 carries, 90 yards, two TDs), Louis Macklin (14 carries, 87 yards, two TDs) and Melvin Mason (12 carries, 70 yards).

Trosin also completed 15 of 28 passes for 126 yards, including a four-yard scoring connection with Adonis Griffin. Lawrence's 37-yard TD run put SOU up 28-10 by halftime, and Macklin's scores were recorded on runs of 20 and 39 yards in the fourth quarter.

Rocky Mountain (3-6 overall, 2-6 Frontier) struggled with its usually potent passing game. Chase White – who was averaging 276 passing yards entering the day – completed just 11 of 25 attempts for 117 yards, and Andre McCullouch, the leading receiver in the NAIA, made one catch for 31 yards..

Karrington Jones and Jaylenn Hart both had interceptions, and a Sean Rogers sack resulted in Armando Gauger's seven-yard TD return for the final score. It was SOU's third fumble-recovery return TD in the last two games.

Jones now owns a team-high five interceptions and Hart has two.

Devvon Gage had a team-high eight tackles with a forced fumble. Kalan Hoedl made seven tackles and was credited with 1 ½ sacks.

The win was SOU's first at Rocky since the 2004 season, though the teams had previously met in Billings only once in Frontier play.
