Southern Oregon too much for UC Merced in 79-62 win

KLAMATH FALLS – A handful of outstanding individual efforts were enough for Southern Oregon to get by California Merced on Saturday afternoon, 79-62 at Oregon Tech's Midland Empire Insurance Classic for a weekend sweep.

Ben DeSaulnier led the way with 28 points on 10-of-15 shooting and six boards for the Raiders (6-1 overall), putting the sophomore guard at 20-plus for the four game in a row and fifth time this season. Jordan West went 10-of-16 to score 21 and lead the Raiders to a team shooting percentage of 52 (32-of-62).

Joel Spear dished out a career-high 14 assists to go with his 18 points, and Brennan Rakoz came off the bench to log his first career double-double (10 points, 10 rebounds).

SOU's 10-point lead in the first half was cut to two in the final minute, but Rakoz sunk the first 3-pointer of his career to make it 37-32 at the break.

The Raiders plugged along and were up 67-47 at the midway point of the second half after five straight West points. Their lead was no smaller than 15 the rest of the way.

Branson Garcia and Rob Chappelle scored 12 apiece for Merced (1-5). The Bobcats shot just 12-of-35 after halftime.

SOU's final tune-ups before Cascade Conference play are next Friday and Saturday at the Menlo Invitational in Atherton, Calif., where they'll first play the host Oaks before taking on Westmont (Calif.
