Another second-half push gets SOU by Evergreen, 91-79

OLYMPIA, Wash. – The 10th-ranked Southern Oregon men's basketball team still hasn't led at halftime of a Cascade Collegiate Conference game, but it still hasn't lost, either.

Trailing Evergreen State by nine with two minutes left in Saturday's first half and 45-41 at the break, the Raiders shot 64 percent (16-of-25) in the second and 59 for the game to secure a 91-79 win at the Costantino Recreation Center.

The Raiders went to 10-3 overall and 3-0 in the CCC going into Sunday's 3 p.m. tilt at Northwest University.

Ben DeSaulnier helped them weather an early storm with 17 of his team-high 22 points in the first half on 6-of-7 shooting. In the second, Joel Spear scored 13 of his 17 and Justin Martin went 3-for-4 from beyond the arc. Spear also finished with a career-high eight rebounds, four assists and three blocks.

Making his first start of the season, Kenny Meyer matched a career-best with 14 points on 3-for-5 shooting from the field and was perfect on six free-throw attempts.

Meyer's second 3-pointer put SOU in front for good, 53-52, with 16:13 to play. Evergreen stayed in it behind Danny Powell's 26 points and 12 rebounds, but Martin's back-to-back triples gave the Raiders their largest lead, 65-57, at the 10-minute mark.

Brock Otis also poured in 20 points for the Geoducks (5-7, 2-2). His layup, followed by a pair of Powell freebies, had them within 77-72 with four minutes left, but Jordan West got free inside for a layup, Spear's steal led to a couple Meyer free throws and Spear got to the rim for another basket to push the lead back to 11.

SOU made its living on easy baskets for a 48-28 advantage in the paint. West had a hand in that with 12 points, nine rebounds, six assists and three blocks, and Brennan Rakoz contributed six points and five boards.

The win was the Raiders' ninth straight over Evergreen. They and Warner Pacific (4-0) are the only unbeaten teams left in conference play.
