Raiders dump British Columbia, 4-1 and 8-2

ASHLAND – The Southern Oregon University softball team dumped British Columbia in its last at-bat of the first game and its first at-bat of the second game Wednesday, winning 4-1 and 8-2 at University Field.

Cheyenne Bricker (Bieber, Calif./Big Valley) and Brianne Craig (Rialto, Calif./Etiwanda) tossed complete games and were charged only with unearned runs for the Raiders, who improved to 12-4 going into this weekend's Northwest Cup in Clackamas. Bricker allowed five hits, walked four and struck out three in a 97-pitch outing, while Craig labored through 127 pitches and scattered six hits with four strikeouts.

The Thunderbirds fell to 2-10.

Kelsey Randall (Concord, Calif./Concord), the reigning Cascade Conference Player of the Week, ripped five more hits in seven at-bats with a double, two runs scored and two RBIs. Alexa Gonzalez (Menifee, Calif./Heritage) went 5-for-7 with two RBIs and a run.

Tied 1-1 in the top of the sixth of the opener, British Columbia's Brittany Hince Siwicki gapped a two-out double with Katie Sherlock on first base. Sherlock attempted to score the go-ahead run but was beat home by the Raider relay – right fielder Tyler Burke (Lakewood, Calif./Lakewood) to the shortstop, Randall, to catcher Jazmin Ruvalcaba (Carson, Calif./Banning).

Conversely, UBC was failed by its defense in the bottom of the sixth. Kristin Ahern (Anaheim Hills, Calif./Rosary) and Ally Painter (La Palma, Calif./St. Joseph) set the table with consecutive one-out singles for SOU, and with two outs the Raiders brought both home plus Megan Winton (Davis, Calif./Davis Senior) on misplayed balls at shortstop and in left field.

Lindsey Ogilvie took the loss, allowing just one earned run in six innings.

Randall and Alexa Gonzalez (Menifee, Calif./Heritage) started Game 2 with back-to-back doubles, leading to Ahern's three-run double and Krystina Pardoski (Gaberville, Calif./South Fork)'s sacrifice fly. Gonzalez made it 5-0 in the second inning by ripping a single to left field and scoring Cortney Nolan (Twin Falls, Idaho/Twin Falls), who reached base with a single of her own.

SOU's last three runs were tacked on in the sixth. Kayla Douglas (Santa Rosa, Calif./Cardinal Newman) and Alyssa Fielding (Novato, Calif./San Marin) singled, Randall stroked an RBI hit, Gonzalez's attempted squeeze went for a single and an RBI, and one more scored on UBC's fourth error of the day.

Gonzalez was perfect in four plate appearances and Nolan and Painter were both 2-for-2.

Randall has hit safely in 14 of 16 games with at least two hits in 11 of them. Gonzalez has turned in seven multi-hit efforts this season – already three more than she had all of last year.

Yasmin Bains totaled four hits to lead UBC, which was swept on Tuesday by Oregon Tech.

Bricker improved to 6-1, and Craig is now 4-0.

The Thunderbirds defeated SOU last week, 6-3, at the Simpson Tournament. The teams will meet again at 3 p.m. Friday, but the Raiders will first play Great Falls (Mont.) at 1 p.m.
