Thompson's 33 not enough as Raiders fall to 11th-ranked Cavs

ASHLAND – The 11th-ranked Concordia men's basketball team went from down 10 to Cascade Conference co-champions in a hurry Saturday night at Bob Riehm Arena.

The Cavaliers got hot at the right time to score a 96-88 win over Southern Oregon in the final game of the regular season despite the Raiders shooting 58 percent from the floor. Concordia improved to 24-5 overall and 14-4 in the CCC and, thanks to third-ranked College of Idaho's stunning loss at Northwest University, gets to share a CCC title with the Coyotes and 16th-ranked Warner Pacific.

SOU (22-8, 11-7) – which was bound to playing Northwest Christian in Wednesday's quarterfinal round of the CCC Championships presented by U.S. Bank before the night began – got the No. 4 seed and home game thanks to Corban's defeat of NCU. The Raiders and Beacons will match up at 7 p.m. at Riehm Arena.

Eric Thompson (Roseburg, Ore./Roseburg) and Tim Weber (Roseburg, Ore./Roseburg) shined on their senior night – Thompson scored 20 of his 33 in the first half, going 13-for-21 from the field, while Weber had 18 points, 11 assists and six rebounds – but not for long enough.

The Raiders led 63-54 with 13:21 to play when Concordia made its move. Justyn Searle converted a 3-point play and the Cavaliers nailed 3-pointers on four consecutive possessions – three by Zach Geary and the last by Tyler Velasquez – to go up 70-68.

Velasquez followed with a layup, a steal that led to Justyn Searle's dunk, and another layup successively to put the Cavs in control.

Thomas Pierce led the Cavs with 20 points and 10 rebounds, while Velasquez had 20 points and seven assists. Searle logged 18 points and nine rebounds and Esvan Middleton had 10 points and seven boards.

SOU's 7-0 run trimmed Concordia's lead to 85-83 with 3:10 to play, but Holton's layup on a feed by Velasquez and four straight Velasquez points put it away.

Jordan West (Gymea Bay, Australia/Port Hacking) went 6-for-7 for the Raiders with 17 points, four assists and four rebounds, and Ben DeSaulnier (Philomath, Ore./Philomath) chipped in eight points.

SOU went 30-for-51 from the field, but the Cavs cleaned up on the glass with 21 on the offensive end and a 40-23 advantage overall.

C of I earned the tiebreaker, which means an automatic bid to the NAIA tournament and the No. 1 seed. The Yotes will host Oregon Tech in the first round of the CCC playoffs, second-seeded Concordia will host Eastern Oregon and Warner Pacific hosts Corban.
