Smith's 29 points help SOU bury Concordia, 90-66

ASHLAND Alexi Smith (Bakersfield, Calif./Stockdale) put on a show that led to another rout for the Southern Oregon University women's basketball team, this one of Concordia, 90-66, on Saturday night at Riehm Arena.

Smith scored a career-high 29 points on 12-for-18 shooting with eight rebounds, helping the eighth-ranked Raiders (25-3 overall, 15-3 Cascade Conference) outscore the Cavaliers (12-15, 6-12) 38-21 over the final 13 minutes.

SOU landed the No. 2 seed in the CCC Championships presented by U.S. Bank. The Raiders will host seventh-seeded College of Idaho (8-19, 7-11) at 7 p.m. Tuesday in the quarterfinal round. If they win, they'll also have homecourt advantage for Friday's semifinals.

The championship is scheduled to be played on Monday, March 2. Regular-season champ Eastern Oregon owns the top seed.

The Raiders dropped their first CCC game of the season at Concordia, 67-66, and were played tightly again by the Cavs until getting into the meat of the second half. Up 52-45, the Raiders started a 14-4 run with three Smith jumpers and a Kristen Schoenherr (Rainier, Wash./Rainier) 3-pointer.

Schoenherr finished with 18 points, five rebounds and four assists. Ashley Claussen (Scotts Valley, Calif./Santa Cruz) had 14 points, hitting three first-half triples, and Carly Meister (Elma, Wash./Elma) and Courtney West (Sydney, Australia/Port Hacking) totaled eight points and five rebounds apiece.

After a slow start, Smith made 10 of her last 11 attempts from the field. Her previous career high was 26, which she hit twice this season.

Sierra Dean scored 23 points with six rebounds off the bench for Concordia, going 8-for-20. Lexi Campbell scored 15 points and Caitlyn McCutcheon had 11.

The Cavaliers ended up with the No. 8 seed and will travel to La Grande for a matchup with EOU.

SOU ended the regular season with a 13-0 home record. The Raiders, who are 13-1 in their last 14 overall, have won their last six home contests by an average of 26 points.

SOU's second-place finish is its best in the regular season since 2007-08.
