Gonzalez goes deep as Raiders take two from Northwest

ASHLAND Alexa Gonzalez (Menifee, Calif./Heritage) jacked her fourth home run of the season in the first game and recorded three more hits in the second as the Southern Oregon University softball team took two Saturday from Northwest (Wash.), 8-0 and 7-5 at University Field.

The Raiders (26-18 overall, 7-9 Cascade Conference) activated the mercy rule in the opener behind an efficient one-hitter from Brianne Craig (Rialto, Calif./Etiwanda), who needed 56 pitches to finish off the Eagles (8-18, 4-14) in five innings.

In Game 2, SOU broke a 3-3 tie in the fifth inning with a two-out rally. Gonzalez started it with a double, Megan Winton (Davis, Calif./Davis Senior) lofted an RBI single into left field and Cortney Nolan (Twin Falls, Idaho/Twin Falls) widened the gap two batters later with a bases-loaded triple to make it 7-3. Cheyenne Bricker (Bieber, Calif./Big Valley) worked 5 2/3 innings of relief for the win, allowing two runs with one earned.

The Raiders moved to 5-3 on their current 14-game homestand, which continues at 2 p.m. Tuesday against 13th-ranked Oregon Tech. SOU is tied with College of Idaho for the fourth and final CCC playoff spot with 12 games left in the regular season.

Gonzalez parked a towering two-run shot over the fence in left field in the first inning of the opener. It was her fourth of the season and SOU's first at home.

SOU scored five more in the third inning, when Winton drove in Krystina Pardoski (Gaberville, Calif./South Fork) with an RBI triple to left and Tyler Burke (Lakewood, Calif./Lakewood) drove a two-run triple to center. Winton added an RBI double down the line for SOU's final run in the fourth.

Gina Ayala (Norwalk, Calif./Santa Fe), Kelsey Randall (Concord, Calif./Concord) and Burke had two hits apiece to back Craig, who struck out three and walked two in her 11th complete game and second shutout. She improved to 11-5.

Janey Ganta's two-run homer in the first inning and an unearned run in the second put Northwest up 3-0 in Game 2. SOU came back with two runs in the second – Alyssa Fielding (Novato, Calif./San Marin)'s drive to left was misplayed, allowing Winton to score, and Randall ripped an RBI single to bring home Nolan – and Gonzalez tied it with an RBI single in the third.

After Winton and Nolan put SOU up in the fifth, Darian Godfrey cut into the lead with a two-run homer in the sixth. Bricker closed it out, though, retiring five of the last six Eagles she faced. She struck out five, walked three and gave up five hits in her 11th win of the season.

Winton scored twice in the second win and Ally Painter (La Palma, Calif./St. Joseph) added a double.

SOU took three of four from Northwest in the season series.
