KLAMATH FALLS – Great Falls pitcher Shelby Abeyta limited Southern Oregon to four hits over seven innings, leading the Argos to a 4-2 win and the Raiders to the end of the road Saturday at the Cascade Conference Championships presented by U.S. Bank.
Center fielder Alex Lowry hit a first-inning solo homer and made it 3-1 in the fourth with an RBI single, going 3-for-4 in the contest.
The win sent the fourth-seeded Argos (28-17 overall) to another elimination game at 4 p.m. against top-seeded Oregon Tech, which lost its first game of the day against second-seeded Corban, 4-1. The winner will need to defeat Corban twice Sunday for the tournament title.
The fifth-seeded Raiders – who on Friday lost to Great Falls, 4-3, before staying alive with a 6-5 win over Concordia – finished up with a record of 33-26, notching more wins than any SOU team since 2005.
SOU tied it at 1-all in the third inning when Kayla Douglas (Santa Rosa, Calif./Cardinal Newman) led off with s single, advanced twice on bunts to third and scored on Kelsey Randall (Concord, Calif./Concord)'s groundout.
The Argos went up again with two fourth-inning runs and strung together a couple hits to tack on another in the seventh, making it 4-1.
In the last frame, Alexa Gonzalez (Menifee, Calif./Heritage) and Krystina Pardoski (Gaberville, Calif./South Fork) led off with consecutive doubles to cut UFG's lead to two. The last three Raiders went down in order against Abeyta, who struck out one and walked two in her complete game.
SOU senior Cheyenne Bricker (Bieber, Calif./Big Valley) lasted three innings in her final start, allowing five hits and three runs before giving way to Brianne Craig (Rialto, Calif./Etiwanda), who took care of the last four frames and gave up three hits and a run in the process.
Seniors Gina Ayala (Norwalk, Calif./Santa Fe), Alyssa Fielding (Novato, Calif./San Marin) and Megan Scherer (Oakland, Calif./Bishop O'Dowd) were also in uniform for the last time.
