No. 9 SOU extends dominance of Evergreen in straight sets

OLYMPIA, Wash. – A first-set wakeup call and a balanced attack propelled the ninth-ranked Southern Oregon University volleyball team to a 25-20, 25-16, 25-19 win over Evergreen in Cascade Conference competition Friday night at CRC Gymnasium.

Emma Gasman popped 11 kills on 16 attacks, Laura Morse had 10 kills and nine digs, and Courtney Macklin and Tyana Andrews added nine kills apiece as the Raiders attacked at a .263 average.

They've won 10 straight to start the season, going to 3-0 in the CCC. They also extended their streak of consecutive sets won against the Geoducks (2-5, 2-1) to 58.

That number was in jeopardy in the first set, when Evergreen got out to a 17-15 lead. After a timeout, the Raiders closed the frame on a 10-3 run. They scored four straight in the second set to go up 12-6 – capped by a pair of Lauren McGowne service aces – before finishing it off by forcing sideouts after 15 of Evergreen's 16 points, and never trailed in the third.

McGowne totaled 42 assists. Gasman added a pair of service aces, Macklin assisted four blocks, and Andrews had eight digs. Freshman libero Ashlyn Flynn's 13 digs were a match-high.

The nine kills for Macklin, who stepped in for her first start, were a season-high.

Jorden Porter and Natalie Taylor amassed eight kills each for the Geoducks, who've dropped 24 straight to the Raiders.

SOU will stay in Washington for Saturday's 5 p.m. match against Northwest (7-2, 3-0), which on Friday swept Oregon Tech.
