Small helps SOU keep sweeps streak alive

ASHLANDNiki Small poured in a season-high 12 kills, including seven in the third set when the Southern Oregon volleyball team came back to keep its sweeps streak alive with a 25-19, 25-11, 27-25 win over Warner Pacific on Saturday evening at Riehm Arena.

SOU was dominant in the first two sets, scoring the final four points of the first and never trailing in the second, but fell behind the Knights 23-18 and 24-21 in the third. Small's final kill started the climb back, and SOU scored four of its last five points on WPC errors.

The eight-ranked Raiders (13-0 overall, 6-0 Cascade Conference) have won 13 in a row and swept their last nine matches, winning 28 consecutive sets overall.

The Knights (4-5, 3-3) got 13 kills out of Janessa Knight, eight from Grace Rivers and 27 assists from Kealia Rosa.

Small, who came into the night as the CCC leader in attacking efficiency, did her damage on 19 total attacks for a .579 average. She's hitting .494 over SOU's last six matches.

Corynn Kopra added nine kills and 10 digs, Tyana Andrews had nine kills and five digs, and Emma Gasman had eight kills with three blocks. Lauren McGowne kept up her torrid pace at setter with 35 assists, and Ashlynn Flynn (17) and Laura Morse (11) combined for 28 digs. McGowne also assisted four of SOU's six blocks and Small assisted three.

The Raiders have won 15 straight matches at home dating back to the end of the 2013 season.

After chipping away at the Knights in the first frame (which was finished by a sput that featured Small and Gasman kills), they went on runs in the second of 7-0, 4-0 and 4-0 while forcing sideout after 10 of WPC's 11 points. The Knights took control in the third with a 5-1 run and attacked at a better clip in that frame (.130) than either of their dismal opening sets (.027 and -.036).

SOU finished it, though, thanks to Small and a stingy defense. WPC ended up hitting .054, becoming the eighth opponent in SOU's last 10 outings to hit under .100.
