Martin scores career-high 23 as Raiders run away from Multnomah

PORTLAND – Battling fatigue after Friday's emotional last-second win at Warner Pacific, the 15th-ranked Southern Oregon men's team relied on long Justin Martin 3-pointers in the first half and easy transition buckets in the second to bank an 84-56 win over the Multnomah Lions on Saturday night at Jim Skagen Court.

Martin hit seven of 14 3-point attempts to establish a new career-high of 23 points – his previous high of 20 was also against the Lions on Dec. 30 in Ashland – and he tallied 14 of those on 5-of-7 shooting in the first half while the rest of his teammates went 9-for-29.

SOU's 35-26 advantage at the break steadily got out of hand thanks to 18 fast-break points, made possible by a Raider defense that had seven steals and blocked seven shots.

Ben DeSaulnier followed up Friday's game-winner with 22 points on 8-of-13 shooting and eight rebounds. Joel Spear registered 10 points, 12 rebounds, seven assists and three steals, and Jordan West went for 17 points, eight rebounds, four assists and two blocks.

The second-place Raiders (19-5 overall, 12-2 Cascade Conference) remained one game behind Northwest Christian and two games ahead of WPC in the standings. They'll return to action at 7:30 p.m. next Saturday against Walla Walla at Mountain Avenue Gym.

Multnomah fell to 3-19 overall and 1-13 in the conference. The Lions – who came into the game with more than half of their total field-goal attempts coming from 3-point range – went 10-for-38 from downtown and shot 31 percent overall, the lowest clip for an SOU opponent in conference play this season. Blake Updike led the way with 18 points and eight rebounds.

Leading 12-11 early, the Raiders got some separation starting with West's maneuver to a layup inside. After that, Martin scored 11 straight points with back-to-back 3-pointers in transition, a layup on the break and one more triple to make it 25-13 with 7:17 left in the half.

The Lions had SOU's lead cut to 44-33 in the second half before the Raiders score 12 unanswered points with four fast-break layups.

Clay Sierra chipped in four points, 10 rebounds, two steals and two blocks for the Raiders.

As a team, SOU shot 20-for-42 in the second half and 44 percent overall. The Raiders benefited, though, by matching a season-low with six turnovers.
