Balanced Raiders take down Knights in three

ASHLAND – If Warner Pacific was an accurate measuring stick, the Southern Oregon volleyball team has reason to feel better about where it stands.

A month after needing a comeback and five sets to take out the Knights, the Raiders demonstrated forward progress Friday evening in controlling a 25-21, 25-23, 25-11 sweep from start to finish at Mountain Avenue Gym.

Senior middle Emma Gasman starred in a balanced effort with 14 kills on 27 attacks, and her three blocks along with Courtney Macklin's six heled the Raiders (11-9 overall, 8-5 Cascade Conference) sink the Knights (7-8, 6-7) to an attacking average of .009. WPC's top threats, Janessa White and Janessa Mast, combined for 24 kills but needed 69 swings and committed 15 errors in doing so. The rest of the Knights had six kills combined.

"That's as completed as we've played this year," SOU head coach Josh Rohlfing said. "For the most part, each practice we've had for the last three weeks has gotten better by the day.  I'm proud of how we came out and I feel like we're headed in a really good direction."

The Raiders have won six sets in a row going into Saturday's 2 p.m. match against Multnomah at Ashland Middle School. They've also won 10 straight matchups with the Knights, who could've forced a tie for fifth place in the CCC standings with a win. Instead, SOU remained tied with College of Idaho in fourth.

The Raiders set the tone in the first two sets by jumping out to leads of 5-0 and 7-0. After trailing 5-4 in the third, they ended the match by taking 21 of the last 27 points.

Lauren McGowne wound up with 32 assists, five digs and a couple kills, guiding SOU to a .214 attack that got better in each set. Ariana Sattler had one her most encouraging nights of the season, going for five kills, 10 digs, three service aces and a block, while Taylor Ristvedt (seven kills, three blocks) and Nila Lukens (six kills) were also sharp on the outside.

The back row complemented the team's nine blocks: Kiley Barcroft totaled 11 digs, Ashlyn Flynn had 10 and Natalie James added five.

For the Knights, Brandy Velasquez had a match-high 20 digs.
