SOU survives College of Idaho, 1-0, to clinch share of first title

ASHLAND – The Southern Oregon women's soccer team will soon get its long-awaited banner. For now, though, the Raiders have their minds on a little more.

Sophomore midfielder Makena Totushek scored her second game-winner in a row Friday afternoon, delivering for the Raiders in the 65th minute in a 1-0 defeat of College of Idaho at Raider Stadium that clinched at least a share of the team's first Cascade Conference championship.

SOU (12-4-1 overall, 9-1 CCC) can secure the outright title – along with the No. 1 seed in the Cascade Conference tournament and its first berth in the NAIA Championships – by taking a win or a tie from Saturday's 2 p.m. contest against Rocky Mountain. The game will also serve as a Senior Day for eight Raiders who before this year hadn't finished higher than fourth in the standings and were picked to place fifth in the preseason.

On a day when the Raiders weren't at their best, Totushek came through again – just as she did with the lone goal last Saturday at Great Falls.

The play unfolded when Lisa Elledge took a corner kick from the left side, reaching Megan McArthur in front of the post. McArthur's shot was blocked, but Totushek was there to clean up for her fourth goal of the season.

McArthur was credited with the assist, her third of the season and 21st point.

Since losing their first four conference games, the Yotes (7-6-2, 3-5-2) had been unbeaten I their last five. Their best chance to score was in the 27th minute, when a deflected ball found Jamiece Yizar in with room about 10 yards from the goal. Her lofted, uncontested shot hit the crossbar.

Kylie Moltzen made two saves to finish off SOU's 12th shutout of the year.

The Raiders had an 18-7 advantage in shots.

Carroll, which has already completed its regular season, is tied with SOU in the point standings. Should the Raiders lose Saturday, the tiebreaker would go to Carroll due to its 1-0 defeat of the Raiders last week.
