SOU drops third straight at Montana Western, 43-24

DILLON, Mont. – The 23rd-ranked Southern Oregon football team's struggles continued Saturday afternoon in a 43-24 loss to Montana Western at Vigilante Field.

The Raiders (4-5 overall, 4-4 Frontier Conference) committed five turnovers and conceded 427 yards of offense. They've lost three straight for the first time since 2011, and the latest was their most decisive loss since going down by a 22-point margin at Rocky Mountain on Sept. 8, 2012.

They settled for Marcus Montano's 32-yard field goal on an opening drive that was stalled by three penalties. After SOU took the lead, Montana Western (5-4, 4-4) scored four unanswered touchdowns and led 27-3 with 1:31 left in the first half.

The last three TDs were scored in a span of just over three minutes: J.D. Ferris hit Beau Brekke for a 33-yard touchdown pass with 4:45 left in the half, Jason Ferris returned an interception 24 yards for a TD on the first play of SOU's ensuing drive, and J.D. Ferris completed a 14-yard TD pass to Tyler Murray after SOU went three-and-out and the Bulldogs returned a punt to the Raider 26-yard line.

Ferris completed 17 of 26 passes for two touchdowns without an interception and rushed for another score. Hunter Thomsen added 89 yards on the ground with a TD.

Following that sequence, SOU cut the lead to 27-10 at halftime by putting together a quick 69-yard drive that was capped by Jack Singler's six-yard rush. The defense opened the second half with a stop, too, but Singler's pass on the Raiders' first play from scrimmage went off the hands of Rey Vega and into the custody of UMW's Riley Martello.

Singler threw for 400 yards with two TD passes but was picked off four times. Matt Retzlaff made nine catches for 133 yards and a score – his fifth 100-yard game of the season – but the running game was shut down as the Raider running backs netted 11 yards on 10 carries.

SOU – which won its first meeting with UMW, 24-20, on Sept. 17 – closes the season with two home games, beginning with next Saturday's 12 p.m. matchup against last-place Montana State-Northern.
