Slow start dooms Raiders in loss to William Jessup

KLAMATH FALLS – The Southern Oregon men's basketball team endured shooting woes and couldn't get out of an early hole in Saturday's 74-64 loss to William Jessup at the Midland Empire Classic.

The Warriors (6-2 overall) started the game on a 15-2 run and the Raiders (4-2) missed nine shots and committed three turnovers before converting their first field goal seven minutes into the game. SOU kept pace from there, getting within four points on two occasions in the second half, but never got over the hump.

Ben DeSaulnier went 6-for-10 to lead the Raiders with 18 points. His converted three-point play, after a fast-break lob from Kenny Meyer, cut the lead to 65-61 with 3:32 left to play. The Warriors came back with Cody Wilcox's three-point play, and DeSaulnier slashed to the basket on the other end and was fouled while making a layup but missed the ensuing free throw.

The Raiders misfired on their last five shots, finishing the night 23-for-60 from the field and 4-for-22 from 3-point range.

Tristen Holmes scored 11 of his 15 in the first half and had six rebounds and four assists. Meyer recorded 10 points and three assists, Jordan Hunt collected 11 rebounds and Jason Simmrin led all reserves with nine points.

The Raiders play next Friday and Saturday at the Bud Presley Classic in Atherton, Calif. They'll start with Westmont, ranked 12th at the NAIA Division I level, and finish up with host Menlo.
