ARCATA, Calif. – The shorthanded Southern Oregon women's basketball team was too much for Humboldt State in the Raiders' season debut Thursday night, punching in with an 89-72 exhibition win at Lumberjack Arena.
The second-ranked Raiders – down one post, Anushka Maldonado, until December and another, Courtney Setzer, due to injury – dominated their NCAA Division II opponent behind 21 points, five rebounds, five steals and five assists from senior forward Autumn Durand and a collective 53-percent effort from the field, a mark they reached only once in 2015-16.
Durand got plenty of help from forward Sydney Mullings (14 points, 6 rebounds, 4 assists), point guard Demi Sahlinger (12 points, 3 assists, 3 steals), guard Toria Bradford (9 points, 5 rebounds, 2 assists) and reserve guard Majerle Reeves (12 points, 4-for-4 from 3-point range).
The Raiders forced 21 turnovers and committed just nine. In the first half, on their way to a 48-33 lead at the break, they had eight steals and a 17-1 advantage in points off turnovers.
Their lead grew to as large as 32 points at 75-43 in the final minute of the third quarter.
Tiani Bradford added nine points, three rebounds and three steals.
SOU plays its first counter next Friday at Lewis-Clark State (Idaho), the No. 7 team in the NAIA Div. I poll.
