DeSaulnier joins 1,000-point club in SOU's win at Simpson

REDDING, Calif.Ben DeSaulnier became the 17th player in Southern Oregon men's basketball history to hit the 1,000-point mark for his career, and the Raiders hung on for an 87-76 win at Simpson on Friday night after most of their 20-point lead disappeared.

DeSaulnier, a junior guard who entered the night with 981 points, scored 21 on 8-of-14 shooting to lead five Raiders in double figures. Tristen Holmes went 5-for-7 from the field and 10-for-12 at the line to score 20 points, Kenny Meyer recorded 15 points, five assists, four rebounds and three steals, and freshman posts Hunter Bradford and Jordan Hunt added 10 points apiece.

The Raiders improved to 2-0 – they also defeated Simpson (1-3) last week in Ashland, 91-64 – going into Sunday's 2 p.m. game in Ashland against perennial Cal Pac Conference powerhouse California Maritime.

They shot 53 percent from the field (29 of 55) but committed 20 turnovers and allowed the Redhawks to shoot 52 percent. Leading 55-35 after a pair of Holmes free throws to start the second half, SOU let Simpson back in it with a 10-0 run, and the lead was 62-59 after Josh Brakkee hit a jumper with 10:42 left to play.

Up 74-69 with 2:29 left, Bradford extended the Raider lead with a 3-pointer from the top of the key. After Brakkee responded with a jumper, Meyer iced the win with another 3-pointer in the corner.

The Raider bench contributed 11 points, led by Conor Carroll's five with four rebounds.

SOU has won 13 straight in the head-to-head series with Simpson.
