Northwest ends SOU's season in semifinals, 1-0

SPRINGFIELD – The best season in the history of Southern Oregon women's soccer is a wrap. The Raiders' postseason, like their regular season, ended in heartbreak.

The fifth-seeded Northwest (Wash.) Eagles defeated second-seeded SOU 1-0 on Saturday night in the semifinal round of the Cascade Conference tournament despite being outshot 14-4 and putting just two shots on goal. Jubilee Zevenbergen sent a long cross along the end-line in the 18th minute, and Rylee Rassier knocked it home for the lone goal.

The Raiders were co-conference champions for the first time in the regular season but came up a point short of winning a tiebreaker with co-champ Carroll and taking the CCC's first automatic bid to the national tournament. This time, they were a win short: Carroll won the other semifinal, giving Northwest the CCC's second automatic bid by virtue of being the other tourney finalist.

Northwest improved to 12-5-2. The Raiders finished with a record of 13-6-1.

Their frantic second-half attempt at getting on the board included advantages of 6-0 in corner kicks and 8-2 in shots, but they didn't produce any chances in the final five minutes.

Eagles keeper Lauren Hellum made three saves for the shutout.

The Raiders' issues finding the net showed themselves often over the last month of the season. In their final eight games, they scored five goals; in the five games preceding that stretch, they scored 13. Friday's quarterfinal against Northwest Christian was their fifth straight win by a 1-0 score.

The loss ended the careers of eight Raider seniors, including six who garnered all-conference recognition this week.

The Eagles – who upset fourth-seeded Eastern Oregon on Friday, 3-2 – will meet Rocky in the title game at noon Monday.
