Yotes eliminate Raiders in conference quarterfinals

CALDWELL, Idaho – Southern Oregon went down at College of Idaho in the Cascade Conference tournament quarterfinals Tuesday night inside the J.A. Albertson Activities Center, ending the careers of two Raider greats in four sets.

The fourth-seeded Yotes won 25-21, 20-25, 25-15, 25-13 behind double-figure kill totals for Ashley Pagan (15), Randi Sturtz (14) and Alaina Slater (11), and Brenna Meehan's eight kills and eight blocks. They attacked at a .231 average, getting up to .242 and .341 in the last two lopsided sets, and sustained an 11-3 advantage in blocks.

The Yotes (20-9 overall) ran their tournament win streak to 11 matches. They'll attempt to win their fifth straight tourney title in La Grande, where they'll take on top-seeded Eastern Oregon or second-seeded Corban in Friday's semifinals.

SOU middle Emma Gasman and setter Lauren McGowne, both four-year starters, did all they could to keep the Raiders (14-14 overall) afloat. Gasman recorded a match-high 16 kills on 34 swings, attacking at a .353 clip, and McGowne went for 41 assists and five digs. Courtney Macklin added nine kills, and Ashlyn Flynn and Kiley Barcroft contributed 28 and 14 digs, respectively.

McGowne ended her career with 4,336 assists, the second-most in SOU history. Gasman finished seventh on the Raiders' career kills list (1,043) and sixth on the blocks list (388). Together, they helped SOU win 81 matches, qualify for two national tournaments and claim one conference title.

The fifth-seeded Raiders were swept in the season series by the Yotes and dropped their last five contests overall.
