Second-half surge leads SOU to blowout of Evergreen

ASHLAND – Freshman guard Conor Carroll hasn't taken long to get acclimated to life in the Cascade Conference. His 21 points Saturday were a driving force in Southern Oregon's 92-61 drubbing of The Evergreen State College at Mountain Avenue Gym.

Carroll, a South Medford product, shot 8-for-10 from the field and 4-for-4 from 3-point range as the Raiders improved to 8-5 overall and 2-1 in the CCC. In SOU's three conference games he's canned eight of his nine 3-point attempts.

Up 41-34 at the break, the Raiders began the second half on an 11-0 run capped by Carroll's mid-range jumper and took the air out of Evergreen's effort for good. Ben DeSaulnier had 15 points and five assists, Tristen Holmes went for 12 points, six assists and five rebounds, and SOU shot 56 percent from the field (35-of-63), including a 20-for-32 exhibit after halftime.

The win set up a critical matchup at 3 p.m. Sunday against 13th-ranked Northwest (Wash.), which suffered its first loss of the season in double-overtime Saturday at Oregon Tech, 98-96.

Evergreen (5-5, 2-2) had won five of six games coming into the weekend but was a lackluster 21-of-63 from the field, shooting just 23 percent (8-of-35) in the second half. Taylor Drey, the Geoducks' leading scorer who poured in 63 points in two CCC wins last weekend, was held to eight points on 3-of-11 shooting.

Jonathan Jack-Nixon kept the Geoducks afloat, recording 18 of his career-high 27 points in the first half. He went 10-for-14 and added 10 rebounds.

With Carroll leading the way, SOU's freshmen combined to score 59 points and shoot 8-for-14 from downtown. The Raiders went 11-for-24 outside as a team and have now hit at least 10 3-pointers in each of their three home games.

Jordan Hunt had eight points and 10 rebounds, and Tate Hoffman went 4-for-5 with nine points and five boards.

The Raiders' 26 assists marked a season high. Kenny Meyer had four of them.

Coming out of halftime, Meyer started the surge by dumping off to Hunt for a two-handed jam. The Geoducks then missed six straight shots and committed three turnovers before their next basket and endured another 13-0 SOU run after cutting the lead to 58-44.

SOU has won 11 matchups in a row against the Geoducks.
