Durand, SOU stay hot against Pomona-Pitzer with fifth straight win

SANTA CRUZ, Calif. – Fifth-ranked Southern Oregon's sharpest performance yet came Saturday at the expense of Pomona-Pitzer (Calif.) in a 95-53 win at the Santa Cruz December Classic, where Autumn Durand continued to torment opponents at both ends of the floor.

Durand, a senior forward from Onalaska, Wash., matched her highest point total in three years with 28 points and a career-high with 14 rebounds. She made 10 of 13 attempts from the field and all six of her free-throw attempts, giving her a fourth straight double-double in extending the Raiders' win streak to five.

SOU (5-1 overall) outscored the NCAA Division III Stagehens (0-7) 26-9 in the second quarter – going 10-of-22 in the frame to their 1-of-8 – and took a 49-25 lead into halftime.

Sydney Mullings joined Durand with her second straight double-double, recording 13 points, 10 rebounds, four steals and three blocks. Tiani Bradford had 16 points, six rebounds and three steals, and Demi Sahlinger had eight points and five assists.

A couple freshmen made waves off the bench, too: Delaney Sparling hit three 3-pointers on the way to 11 points and Daranda Hinkey added 10.

The Raiders shot 45 percent from the field (36-of-80), made 15 of 17 free throws and committed just eight turnovers – their lowest total since Feb. 26, 2008, a span of 265 games.

They had 16 steals, forcing the Stagehens to commit 27 turnovers. Pomona-Pitzer was led by Anita Romero's 22 points on 9-of-12 shooting but shot just 19-of-52 as a team.

In an eight-minute stretch starting in the final minute of the first quarter, the Raiders went on a 23-2 run that brought their lead to 43-18.

The meeting was the first ever between the teams.

SOU finishes up play at the Classic at 2 p.m. Sunday against La Verne (Calif.) – the Raiders' final nonleague game before the start of Cascade Conference play.
