SOU takes care of Beacons in Eugene, 55-42

EUGENE – The sixth-ranked Southern Oregon University women's basketball team was up to another road challenge Friday night, topping fourth-place Northwest Christian 55-42 at the Morse Events Center.

Even with the Cascade Conference's regular-season title locked up, the Raiders (25-1 overall, 18-1 CCC) didn't take their feet off the gas in improving to 11-1 away from home this season. After a relatively slow start, they lost the Beacons (18-10, 13-6) by winning the second quarter 23-11 to take a 34-19 advantage into the break.

For the first time this season, two different Raiders registered double-doubles: Autumn Durand (10 points, 13 rebounds) and Carly Meister (12 points, 12 rebounds), who helped SOU to a 34-16 advantage in points in the paint against the only team in the conference with comparable size.

The Raiders finish out the regular season at 5:30 p.m. Saturday in Salem against Corban. They'll take the No. 1 seed into the CCC tournament, which starts with the quarterfinal round at 7 p.m. Tuesday at Mountain Avenue Gym.

Demi Sahlinger added eight points, two assists and two steals for SOU, which got by despite a subpar night from all-star point guard Ashley Claussen. But despite going 3-for-11 from the field without an assist, Claussen did have a career-high six steals to help the Raiders get to 20.

The Raiders committed a season-high 27 turnovers and only shot 39 percent from the field, but they held the Beacons to a 29-percent clip (16-of-56) and didn't allow more than 12 points in a single quarter.

Courtney Setzer added five points and seven boards off the bench. Six Raiders had two steals apiece.

The Beacons were led by Monique Thompson's 12 points and four rebounds. They were down just 15-12 before the Raiders exploded for a 16-2 run midway through the second quarter.
