SOU falls at Corban, gets another shot Wednesday in CCC tourney

SALEM – The Southern Oregon University men's basketball team got some help from Oregon Tech on Saturday night but couldn't help itself in a 90-74 loss at Corban.

The Warriors (16-12, 10-10 CCC) controlled the paint behind Cyrus Ward's 28 points and 11 rebounds, while Caleb Herzberg (21 points) and Cody Crowe (10) combined to go 6-for-9 from 3-point range. A 53-percent clip from the field gave them 40-28 halftime lead.

Trailing 46-35, the Raiders (23-7, 16-4) cut into the deficit with nine unanswered points, but Corban responded with a 13-0 run of its own and controlled the rest of the contest. SOU hadn't lost back-to-back games all season.

Meanwhile in Eugene, Oregon Tech defeated Northwest Christian, 72-59, meaning the Raiders would have earned a share of the CCC regular-season title with a win on their end. However, NCU had already clinched the No. 1 seed in the Cascade Conference tournament and an automatic bid to the national tournament with Friday's 85-75 defeat of SOU.

The 11th-ranked Raiders will get another shot at Corban as the No. 2 seed when the CCC quarterfinals open at 7 p.m. Wednesday inside Mountain Avenue Gym.

Ben DeSaulnier attempted to keep SOU in it with 25 of his game-high 29 points in the second half. Clay Sierra went for 11 points and eight rebounds, and Joel Spear struggled from the field (3-of-11) but still finished with 10 points, seven boars and three blocks.

The Raiders struggled shooting all night: They went 22-for-37 from the line and 4-for-17 from beyond the arc, marking their lowest 3-point total since a Jan. 5 loss at Oregon Tech.
