No. 18 Raiders pummel Beacons in historic offensive breakout

ASHLAND – Historical context may not do justice to the parade around the bases that broke out during 18th-ranked Southern Oregon's 11-1 and 12-1 Cascade Conference wins over Northwest Christian on Friday afternoon at University Field, but it's worth a shot:

In Game 1, the Raiders (30-12 overall, 11-3 CCC West) put up a 10-spot in the second inning, their most runs in a single frame in nine years and their most in a conference game in 13. In Game 2, Alexa Gonzalez hit two home runs – the first multi-homer game of her career – and Megan Winton went deep once to give the Raiders three homers in a single home game for the first time since 2012. Their assault on Beacons pitching resulted in 29 hits on the day, the most for SOU in a CCC twin bill since 2006. They accomplished it all in 10 innings, as both games were cut short by the mercy rule.

Shortstop Kelsey Randall, the proverbial grand marshal, went 4-for-5 on the day. She also stole four bases without being caught, making her 30-for-32 on the bases this year, 64-for-74 in her career and SOU's new all-time leader in steals with six regular-season games to spare in just her sophomore season. She moved into fifth place on SOU's career hits list, too, with 143.

The Raiders remained a game ahead of Oregon Tech for first place in the CCC West going into Saturday's 11 a.m. senior day doubleheader against Corban, which was swept Friday at OIT.

The Beacons (12-30, 6-12 CCC West) totaled as many errors (seven) as hits, which led to 10 unearned runs.

Sydney White (11-6) went three innings, struck out three and yielded two hits during her start in the opener. Lacie Crawford (3-2) entered to pitch two innings of perfect relief before going the distance in Game 2. In all, Crawford struck out five, walked two and yielded five hits and one run in seven frames.

SOU's first at-bat of the day proved to be a harbinger: Randall led off with a single that found a hole up the middle, and it eventually bounced past centerfielder Paige Griffith for a three-base error and the game's first run. Aaliyah Oliver – who went 2-for-2 in the opener along with Tyler Burke, Abigail Lund and Jazmin Ruvalcaba – stroked a two-run double down the right-field line in the second, and Randall drove her in with a single to make it 4-0. Two batters later, Kayleen Smith's two-out grounder was bobbled at shortstop to make way for seven more unearned runs on six consecutive hits by Rebecca Velasquez (double), Burke (single), Winton (single) and Ruvalcaba (single), Lund (single) and Oliver (bunt single). The inning didn't come to an end until Lund was thrown out on an unsuccessful double-steal play.

In Game 2, freshman Amelia Hensler – who went 3-for-4 on the day – came up with two runners on and two out in the first. Her liner to right field was dropped, allowing Gonzalez and Smith to score.

Gonzalez's first bomb sailed over the fence in left field for a three-run shot in the second. Lund hit an RBI triple (and scored on another error) in the third, and Gonzalez led off the fourth with another towering shot to left. Following Hensler's RBI single, Winton hit a two-run homer to cap the scoring.

Six of SOU's 13 total homers this year have been against Beacons pitching in the last five games, including all three of Gonzalez's. The Raiders swept the season series.

Parker Fritter launched her 11th home run of the season in the fourth inning of Game 2, accounting for NCU's lone run.
