Royals finish off Southern Oregon in four sets

FULLERTON, Calif.Nila Lukens established a new career-high for the third straight match with 14 kills, but there was little else for 18th-ranked Southern Oregon to savor Monday night in its first trip to Hope International's Darling Pavilion.

Similar to their first loss of the season against Montana Tech, unforced errors were costly again for the Raiders (3-2 overall) in the 25-21, 25-22, 23-25, 25-18 setback against HIU. They committed 45 of them, including 33 on the attack, and hit at clips of .062 in the first set and .083 in the second.

Lauren McGowne assisted 44 of their 51 kills and had nine digs, Kiley Barcroft had 21 digs and Lukens did her damage on swings. Courtney Macklin contributed nine kills, and Emma Gasman (four blocks) and Taylor Ristvedt (three blocks) each had seven kills.

Three players hit double-digit kills for the Royals (2-1), who attacked at an overall clip of .193 to SOU's .116: Mikayla Derieg (14), Katie Landazuri (13) and Kimberly Schnars (12).

The sequence that ended the first set proved to be a harbinger: With SOU leading 21-20, Derieg delivered consecutive kills before the Raiders finished themselves off with two attacking miscues and a reception error. After winning the third set, the Raiders were tied at 9-all in the fourth when the Lions ran away with an 8-2 spurt.

The meeting was the teams' first in eight years.

SOU's Southern California swing continues Tuesday with a 5 p.m. match at 19th-ranked Biola.
