SOU trades blows with UC Davis, falls 52-35

DAVIS, Calif. – The good news is the Southern Oregon University football team's offense is going to be just fine.

The Raider defense, on the other hand, will be glad to get back to NAIA competition next week after Saturday night's 52-35 loss to NCAA FCS affiliate UC Davis at Aggie Stadium.

SOU went blow-for-blow with the Aggies early on, even holding a 14-7 lead 10 minutes into the game, but couldn't keep pace despite totaling 653 yards of offense against their Big Sky Conference opponent –the 14th-most in team history – and Zack Davis' record night.

With next week's 1 p.m. home-opener against Montana Western looming, the Raiders are 0-2.

Davis, a senior receiver, hooked up with quarterback Tanner Trosin for touchdown receptions of 67 yards in the first quarter and 93 in the fourth. The latter TD, which Trosin tossed approximately 60 yards over the top and Davis took through a clear path the rest of the way, was the longest in recorded history at SOU, beating out Dylan Young's 91-yard TD via Austin Dodge on Nov. 1, 2014 against Rocky Mountain.

Trosin completed 25 of 51 passes for a career-high 428 yards but was intercepted four times. Davis made four catches for 176 yards – his average of 44 yards per catch also broke a 24-year-old Raider record, previously held by Trevor Kobs – and junior tight end Ben Bachman had six receptions for 101 yards, giving the Raiders two 100-plus-yard receivers for the first time since Young and Ryan Retzlaff did it on Dec. 6, 2014 at Saint Xavier (Ill.).

Transfer running back Rey Vega broke out, too, with 108 yards on 14 carries, including a 48-yard score in the second quarter.

UC Davis (1-1), which last week lost 53-28 at University of Oregon, finished with 617 yards of total offense and a few funky numbers of its own: Luuga Manusamoa rushed 13 times for 145 yards and two scores, Ramon Varas caught six passes for 208 yards and a 65-yard TD, and quarterback Ben Scott went 22-of-29 for 381 yards and four TDs.

Scott's 18-yard TD pass to Nehemiah Winston put the Aggies on the board first with 9:11 left in the first quarter. Sixteen seconds later, SOU tied it on Trosin's 67-yard connection with Davis. After an Aggies three-and-out, the Raiders took advantage of a short field and Sean Tow capped off a 38-yard drive with a 13-yard scoring run.

The Aggies claimed the next two touchdowns on rushes by Joshua Kelley (seven yards) and Manusamoa (90 yards) to go into the second quarter up 21-14, and Vega's 48-yard burst tied it for the last time with 9:13 left in the half.

UC Davis scored the next 24 points, and SOU saw its window close on a critical sequence to start the third quarter. Down 35-21, the Raiders marched to the Aggies' 4-yard line. They were shut down on their first two tries, but advanced to the 2-yard line on a third-down pass interference call. From there, they lost four yards on three plays and Marcus Montano's 23-yard field-goal attempt capped the empty 69-yard drive.

The Aggies were in the end zone two plays later, and Trosin was picked off on SOU's ensuing possession.

Matt Retzlaff added a 16-yard TD catch for SOU three minutes into the fourth quarter. He had six catches for 77 yards.

AJ Cooper and Kevin Blueford led the Raider defense with seven tackles apiece. Clayton Jones broke up three passes and Mylz Blake forced a fumble.
