SOU rallies again to knock off Knights in 5

PORTLAND – For the second night in a row, the Southern Oregon volleyball team staged a comeback in the fourth and fifth sets and earned a pivotal Cascade Conference road victory at Warner Pacific on Saturday in a 25-16, 23-25, 21-25, 25-17, 21-19 decision at Valentine Court.

In the fifth set alone, The Raiders (7-6 overall, 4-2 CCC) and Knights (5-3, 4-2) were tied 11 times, including every point from 10 to 19. At 19-all, WPC's Janessa White served over the back line. And on SOU's fifth match-point of the frame, Knights setter Kealia Rosa was called for a bad set to give SOU the weekend sweep.

A night after punching in a career-high 23 kills, Emma Gasman had another match-high with 21 on 48 attempts – including five in the fourth set and four in the abbreviated tiebreaker – in leading the Raiders to a .211 team attacking average. Ariana Sattler stepped up big with 17 kills, as many as she'd totaled in SOU's last four matches combined, and did so on just 33 swings.

Lauren McGowne went for 49 assists, four digs and four blocks. Courtney Macklin added 10 kills and four blocks, and freshman Gretchen Litzsinger came through with seven kills and 16 digs in the absence of Nila Luken's, SOU's usual starting outside hitter.

WPC had been working on a four-match win streak, and had won its last three in sweeps.

Janessa White (18 kills) and Janessa Mast (17) led the Knights, but combined they were forced into 22 attacking errors.

After claiming the second and third sets, WPC jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the fourth when the Raiders snatched the momentum on a 16-6 run with Litzsinger, Natalie James and Kelsy Weber on service duty. SOU went on to hit .286 in the frame and cornered the Knights into committing 10 attacking errors.

However, SOU trailed 10-7 in the tiebreaker before Gasman sparked a 4-1, set-tying run with a pair of kills. Trailing 16-15, Gasman extended the match with another kill, and when the teams were tied at 18 she came through again.

The last time the Raiders had won back-to-back five-set decisions was the end of the 2011 season.

Now third in the CCC standings, they'll return home for Wednesday's 7 p.m. match against Oregon Tech and Saturday's 8 p.m. match against Walla Walla.
