Corban scores rare win against SOU

SALEM – The Corban University athletic department often markets itself with the hashtag #PoweredByTradition, and until Friday night one of its longest-standing traditions was losing to the Southern Oregon volleyball team.

That changed, an in convincing fashion, with the Warriors' 25-20, 25-22, 18-25, 25-22 defeat of the 18th-ranked Raiders in front of a rowdy crowd at the C.E. Jeffers Center that helped the home team end a 26-match losing streak in the series going back to 2003.

The match served as the Cascade Conference opener for both teams. Corban – whose impressive nonleague showing included wins over NCAA Division II opponent Concordia (Ore.) and defending Frontier champion Carroll (Mont.) – improved to 5-2 overall. SOU dropped its fourth straight and went to 3-5 going into Saturday's 5 p.m. contest at Northwest Christian.

Corban outside Amber Parker, last year's CCC kills champion, had a match-high 17 kills on 48 attacks. But it was the Warrior middles, Alaina Gentili and Lauren Condon, at the root of the Raiders' headaches with a combined 23 kills on just 49 swings.

The Warriors' back row made life tough on SOU's hitters, who turned in a pedestrian team attacking average of .098. Amber Parker, the CCC's 2015 freshman of the year, had 50 assists and 13 digs, and Haley Wells, the reigning CCC libero of the year, picked up 21 digs.

After a third-set win in which the Raiders tallied five of their 15 blocks to extend the match, they were on the verge of forcing a tiebreaker with a 19-18 edge. That's when a seemingly errant attack by Parker rolled along the net and dropped just inbounds, starting a 5-0 run that proved too much for SOU to overcome.

Raider middle Emma Gasman was one off her career high with nine blocks – two solo, seven assisted – and also registered a team-high 11 kills. Nila Lukens had 10 kills, Taylor Ristvedt went for nine kills and six assisted blocks, and Lauren McGowne did her best to keep the Raiders in it with 37 assists and nine digs.

SOU's digs leader was Ashlyn Flynn (19), but SOU needed more to slow down the Warriors. Outside of a third set in which they hit negative-.053, the attacked at clips of .324 in the first, .229 in the second and .343 in the fourth.
