Yotes end Raiders' win streak with fourth-set rally

ASHLAND – Cheyan Coburn had four of College of Idaho's 11 service aces Friday night, including the match-clincher as the Coyotes halted Southern Oregon's momentum and avoided a fifth set at Mountain Avenue Gym.

Brenna Meehan recorded 15 kills and 10 digs, Ashley Pagan added 12 kills and Kilee Lopez had 21 digs to lead the Coyotes (11-6 overall, 6-3 Cascade Conference) in the 25-21, 25-22, 19-25, 26-24 decision, which ended SOU's four-match winning streak.

After dropping the first two sets, the Raiders (9-7, 6-3) won the third handily and led 22-19 in the fourth after Taylor Ristvedt and Courtney Macklin teamed up for consecutive blocks. The Yotes then went on a 4-1 run – highlighted by a combo block by Jayde Folsom and Jackie Van Vliet, and Folsom's equalizing kill – but Macklin put SOU back up, 24-23, with a booming kill.

C of I then took the last three points to win it: SOU committed an attacking error, Meehan smashed a kill and Coburn wrapped up the victory with an ace.

The loss spoiled strong efforts from Lauren McGowne (42 assists, 11 digs), Emma Gasman (16 kills), Ashlyn Flynn (17 digs) and Macklin (9 kills, 6 blocks). Ristvedt added 11 kills, but SOU's outside hitters combined for seven kills compared to 11 attacking errors.

SOU's defense improved as the night went on – Natalie James assisted with eight digs in the back row and Ariana Sattler had seven – after C of I attacked at averages of .161 and .265 in the opening sets. The Yotes hit .026 in the third and .150 in the fourth.

However, the Raiders couldn't overcome a .129 average of their own and 11 reception errors.

Jayde Folsom set the serve-receive tone, serving the Yotes to a 7-0 lead to start the match and notching a pair of service aces during the run.

Randi Sturtz chipped in eight kills for the Yotes. Van Vliet had seven and Slater had six.

SOU hosts sixth-ranked Eastern Oregon at 7 p.m. Saturday.
