Raiders pay back Northwest with clutch finish

KIRKLAND, Wash. – One month after Northwest (Wash.) ran the Southern Oregon men's basketball team off its home floor, the Raiders returned the favor Friday night at NU Pavilion.

Unlike the Eagles' 20-point ambush on Dec. 18, this one, a 94-91 decision in favor of SOU, included a stress-inducing finish. The Raiders (13-8 overall, 7-4 Cascade Conference) hung on only after Kenny Meyer split a pair of free throws with 12 seconds remaining, and NU's Michael Dupree clanked a 3-point attempt on the other end. His miss went out of bounds off SOU hands with two seconds left, but the Eagles couldn't find an open player on the perimeter on the ensuing inbounds play.

Paul Loranger, left alone in the paint, gathered the inbound pass and immediately traveled, clinching SOU's pivotal win.

Ben DeSaulnier scored 18 of his 26 points in the second half, shooting 11-of-17 overall and adding six rebounds, and point guard Tristen Holmes turned in another explosive performance with 21 points and six assists. Freshman forward Hunter Bradford also played big, scoring 10 of his 15 points in the second half with a pair of 3-pointers and a transition slam.

The Raiders shot 57 percent (35-of-62) and led for a total of 34 minutes, going up 42-33 at halftime and by 13 within the first two minutes of the second half.

The Eagles (15-5, 7-5) climbed back in it, though, on the backs of Dak Shagren, who scored all 18 of his points in the second half, and Dupree, who totaled 22 points and seven assists.

They finally took the lead, 83-81, on Dupree's fall-away jumper with 4:52 left. Holmes answered with two free throws on the other end after he was fouled driving the lane, and one possession later DeSaulnier muscled a three-point play that put the Raiders up 86-83. They completed the 8-0 run when, with 3:15 left, Holmes made his first free throw and missed his second but DeSaulnier was there for the put-back.

SOU kept the door open by going 4-of-8 at the line in the final three minutes.

The Raiders have won in back-to-back seasons at Northwest for the first time since the 2000-01 and 01-02 seasons.

They got plenty of help off the bench from freshmen Jason Simmrin (9 points, 6 rebounds, 4 steals) and Conor Carroll (10 points). Tate Hoffman chipped in eight points and six boards.

SOU plays at 7:30 p.m. Saturday at Evergreen State.
