Late surge lifts SOU over Evergreen

OLYMPIA, Wash. – Another overwhelming effort in the final minutes allowed No. 4 Southern Oregon to thwart the most surprising upset bid of the season Saturday night at The Evergreen State.

Tied 45-45 at the hallway mark of the fourth quarter, the Raiders rattled off 17 unanswered points in a matter of three minutes and skated home with a 64-49 win at the Costantino Recreation Center, their 19th straight overall.

They made seven straight shots during the spurt – Autumn Durand had a couple layups and a 3-pointer to finish with 16 points, nine rebounds and three steals, and Majerle Reeves capped it with her only 3 – and generated five turnovers. Overall, SOU shot just 36 percent (26-of-72) but forced a season-high 36 turnovers and only committed 10.

The Raiders improved to 19-1 overall and 12-0 in the Cascade Conference, maintaining a two-game lead in first place over Eastern Oregon and Oregon Tech. Next Saturday and Sunday they return home to host Multnomah and Warner Pacific.

Prior to the outburst, the game featured 11 ties and 12 lead changes, though the Geoducks (4-16, 3-10) never led by more than three. TESC's Kylie Gorton, who scored 10 points off the bench, tied it for the last time with a triple. Gabi Fenumai added 10 points and 15 boards as the Geoducks shot 42 percent from the field (18-of-43), including a 5-of-8 mark from downtown.

SOU guards Tiani Bradford and Demi Sahlinger were primarily responsible for Evergreen getting up 29 fewer field-goal attempts, collecting six steals apiece, and Durand had five of SOU's 14 offensive rebounds.

Sahlinger also had 10 points and three assists. Toria Bradford chipped in 14 points and three steals and Sydney Mullings had 11 points, four assists, four rebounds and two blocks.
