Southern Oregon's streak ends at 25th-ranked OIT

KLAMATH FALLS – The Southern Oregon women's basketball team's school-record win streak is over at 21 games. It took a relatively unknown reserve playing the half of her life to put it to bed.

Baylee Toney, a sophomore guard from Phoenix, Ore., snapped 25th-ranked Oregon Tech out of its shooting woes by scoring 19 of her 20 points after halftime on 8-of-9 accuracy and lifted the Owls to a 72-69 upset of the third-ranked Raiders on Tuesday night at Danny Miles Court.

Down by as many as 16 points in the second quarter, the Owls trailed by two when they went on a 10-0 run that included two Toney jumpers to go up 70-62 with two minutes left. It was 72-69 when Toney had a chance to ice the game at the free-throw line; she missed both attempts, but Demi Sahlinger's potential 3-pointer attempt fell short on the other end as the buzzer sounded.

OIT (20-5 overall, 13-2 Cascade Conference) pulled to within one game of SOU (21-2, 14-1) in the standings. Eastern Oregon, which hosts SOU on Feb. 10, is also a game back in the loss column.

Toney, who had cracked double figures in one other conference game and was averaging 5.3 points when the night began, did the bulk of her damage in the third quarter with three 3-pointers and 13 points. When it started, the Owls were down 36-27. They took their first lead, 44-42, when Nohea Waiwaiole made a pair of free throws with 3:38 left in the period.

Waiwaiole finished with 18 points. Her jumper just under the five-minute mark put OIT up 64-62 and marked the first of four straight possessions in which the Owls scored. She made another mid-range shot on the last one to give the Owls their biggest lead at eight.

Sydney Mullings led the Raiders with 18 points and seven rebounds, and Autumn Durand complemented her inside with 15 points, six boards and three steals. Toria Bradford had 12 points and six boards and Demi Sahlinger added 11 and four assists, but the Raider bench only chipped in six points – its lowest output of the season, and a game after it provided 57.

SOU shot just 11-of-36 from the field and 2-of-13 from 3 in the second half, finishing with a 38-percent flip for the game. The Owls were at 46 percent (22-of-48) but went 23-of-34 at the free-throw line compared to SOU's 13-of-18.

The Raiders – who had also won 23 consecutive conference games – pick up at 12:30 p.m. Friday at Walla Walla (Wash.).
