Raiders blank Northwest, go to 8-1 in Cascade Conference

KIRKLAND, Wash. – Southern Oregon's run at a Cascade Conference men's soccer championship got a little more serious as it rendered another reputable opponent offense-less on Friday afternoon.

The Raiders made the Northwest (Wash.) Eagles their latest victims in a 2-0 victory at NU Athletic Field, going to 8-1 in the CCC with their seventh shutout in conference play. No other team has more than four.

The Eagles (7-4-1 overall, 5-2-1 CCC) had scored 16 times in their previous four games and had yet to be blanked in CCC action when the day began. They mustered three shots on goal, each of which were handled by SOU keeper Wyatt Zabinksi.

The Raiders (8-6 overall) got their lead just two seconds before halftime, when from the left side Kelly Gieber passed to defender Logan Guler for an 8-yard strike that went down as Guler's second go-ahead goal in three games. The assist was Gieber's CCC-leading fifth in conference play.

In the 62nd minute, Esteban Castaneda scored for the second straight game and the fourth time in CCC play, dribbling into an unassisted, 15-yard shot from the left side.

The Raiders built a 16-11 edge in total shots with seven on goal.

They'll be watching closely Friday's late game between sixth-ranked Corban (6-0-1) and 10th-ranked Rocky Mountain (6-1), the teams directly behind them in the standings.

At 1 p.m. Saturday, SOU visits The Evergreen State in Olympia, Wash.
