Northwest nips Raiders in 5

KIRKLAND, Wash. – The Southern Oregon University volleyball team was finally stopped in a fifth set Saturday night as Northwest (Wash.) halted its comeback attempt in a 25-21, 25-22, 20-25, 21-25, 15-5 decision at NU Pavilion.

SOU (15-8 overall, 12-6 Cascade Conference) and the Eagles (19-7, 13-5) entered the night in a fourth-place tie. The Raiders were working on a six-match winning streak and had won all six of their previous tiebreaker sets this season.

They never led in the fifth against Northwest, turning just four of their 24 attacks into kills during the frame. The Eagles staked to a 7-4 lead before going on a five-point run that included a pair of Audrey Saelens kills.

Amanda Waterman had 16 kills, Mattie Jo Johnson 15 and Keann White 12 to lead the Eagles, who hit .222 and completed a season sweep of the Raiders for the second year in a row. Morgan Pilon ran the show with 60 assists, and four individuals reached double-figure dig totals, led by Alysanne Van Dyke's 34.

The Raiders, who hit .158, extended the match with a well-rounded attack that featured Dani Johnson (15 kills), Taylor Ristvedt (11), Makayla Hoyt (11), Elliott Cook (10) and Malie Rube (9). Ashlyn Flynn tallied 30 digs and Emma Ryan had 14, while Cook assisted five blocks and Ariana Sattler got in on four.

SOU returns to Mountain Avenue Gym for its final regular-season matches next weekend, Friday against 15th-ranked Corban and Saturday against Northwest Christian.
