Raiders come through in clutch to beat SF State, 62-60

SAN FRANCISCO – Southern Oregon defeated an NCAA Division II team for the third year in a row Monday night, escaping San Francisco State with a 62-60 win after some late heroics at The Swamp.

With 1:02 left and SOU trailing 58-57, Raider forward Ariel Augustine spotted up for a 3-pointer on the right wing and put it down. The lead was short-lived, as Gators forward Tyiteyana Jefferson scored inside for the tie at the end of the shot clock on the other end, but Destinee Jones got it back with 11 seconds to go by taking a post pass and finishing over her defender.

The Gators (0-1) had a couple chance on the other end: Jones blocked an Imani Smith layup out of bounds, and Smith was fouled after taking the ensuing inbounds pass but clanked both free throws.

The 15th-ranked Raiders went to 2-0 going into the Lithia-Oregon Tech Classic, where they'll play Simpson (Calif.) on Friday and William Jessup (Calif.) on Saturday.

Led by 13 points apiece from guards Toria Bradford and Remi Mejia, they overcame a 35-percent shooting night and went 9-of-17 in the fourth quarter. After misfiring on 16 of 19 attempts from downtown through the first three periods, they went 4-of-10 in the last.

Augustine scored six of her 10 points in the fourth quarter. Making her first start as a Raider, Jones contributed seven rebounds, five points, four assists and four steals.

The Raiders had their largest lead at 39-31 following a Syd'Nee Fryer 3 with 3:26 left in the third before watching the Gators reel off 13 unanswered points. There were three ties and three lead changes from that point on.

Smith's 14 points led the Gators, who shot 49 percent from the field (23-of-47) but committed 24 turnovers and allowed the Raiders post a 21-7 advantage in offensive rebounds.
