Raiders too much for MSU-Northern down the stretch

KLAMATH FALLS – Against a Montana State-Northern defense that yielded fewer points than anyone in the NAIA a season ago, Southern Oregon had too many weapons down the stretch of an 89-83 win Saturday afternoon at the Lithia-Oregon Tech Classic.

Led by Ben DeSaulnier's 21 points, the 11th-ranked Raiders (4-1) scored more against the Lights (3-2) than anyone since the 2014-15 season and ran their winning streak to four games.

The Raiders trailed 77-72 after Justin Dunsmore's eighth 3-pointer of the game, but constructed a 16-4 run with five minutes left that was started by DeSaulnier's jumper and forward Jordan Hunt's game-tying 3-pointer. Tristen Holmes' runner put them up for good with 3:43 to go, and Holmes found Hunt for a layup inside that extended the lead to 84-81 at the 1:27 mark. After a defensive stop, a Holmes free throw followed by his assist of an Aaron Borich layup sealed the win.

Hunt finished with 18 points, eight rebounds, four blocks and four assists. Holmes had 16 points, seven rebounds and five assists, and Tate Hoffman (14 points) and Borich (10 points) joined them in double figures. SOU as a collective shot 51 percent from the field (33-of-65) and 9-of-20 from 3.

The Raiders had to overcome a Dunmore barrage in the first half, when he made 6-of-7 from downtown and helped the Lights build a nine-point lead. With 3-pointers from Holmes, Hunt and Conor Carroll in a span of 74 seconds, the Raiders went into halftime down 49-45.

Dunsmore finished with 31 points and 6-foot-10 center Ryan Reeves added 19 points, nine boards and four blocks for the Lights.

SOU will stay busy next week, playing Wednesday at California Maritime and Friday and Saturday at the Bud Presley Classic against Menlo and Westmont in Atherton, Calif.
