SOU drops 3-2 thriller to 8th-seeded Grizzlies in Opening Round

LAWRENCEVILLE, Ga. – Southern Oregon got its first taste of the NAIA Men's Soccer Championships on Saturday afternoon at Georgia Gwinnett College, and with it the bitterness of a heartbreaking exit.

In an Opening Round matchup at the Grizzly Soccer Complex, No. 8 seed GGC scored the game-winning goal of a 3-2 decision in the 74th minute to end the Raiders' season after they'd come back to life with an equalizer 12 minutes earlier.

A header off a free kick by freshman Michael Weber, which went for his seventh goal of the season, was the difference. It sent the Grizzlies (15-6-1) to the 16-team final site in Delray Beach, Florida, where they'll take on ninth-seeded Vanguard (Calif.) in the second round on Nov. 27. The win was their first after three previous futile appearances in the national tournament.

It spoiled a two-goal day for SOU's Zac Hansen, and a Cinderella third season for the program that started with five consecutive losses. In their previous 16 games – which yielded Cascade Conference regular-season and tournament titles – the Raiders (14-7-1) had allowed five goals combined.

Hansen initiated an action-packed sequence in the fifth minute, heading in Kelly Gieber's corner kick to put the Raiders on top. GGC responded with two goals in the next eight minutes – the first by Samuel Sampaio Gomes on an assist from Ian Aramburu, and the second by Andrew White on a penalty kick.

White's goal marked the first time an opponent led SOU in 952 games minutes spanning 11 games.

The lead lasted until the 62nd minute, when Hansen scored his fifth goal of the season – all in SOU's last seven games – again on a corner kick, this time on an assist from Sean McManamon.

Twelve minutes later, Weber had the final say.

The Grizzlies posted a 15-11 advantage in shots, though both teams put six on goal. With five seconds left, GGC keeper Matija Gligorovic corralled the game-clinching save on a McManamon strike.
