Late 3 gives Oaks back-and-forth battle with SOU

ATHERTON, Calif. – Jeremiah Testa hit a 23-footer from the wing with 3.5 seconds left, lifting Menlo to a 90-87 win against Southern Oregon on Friday afternoon in the Bud Presley Classic at Haynes Prim Pavilion.

After Testa's go-ahead shot, the Oaks (7-2) fouled the Raiders (5-2) intentionally to send Conor Carroll to the free-throw line. Carroll missed his second shot intentionally and SOU forward Jordan Hunt snagged the rebound, hitting Ben DeSaulnier for a clean look at the tie in the corner, but DeSaulnier's attempt rimmed off at the buzzer.

Carroll scored 18, going 5-of-9 from 3-point range, and DeSaulnier had 18 points, six rebounds and three assists.

In the final 10 minutes the score was tied at eight points and the lead changed hands four times. The Raiders took their first lead since the opening minutes, 70-66, on back-to-back Carroll triples with nine minutes left.

Tied at 83-all with 2:04 to go, DeSaulnier came off a back-pick and took a pass from Tristen Holmes for a basket-and-one to give the Raiders the lead, but four straight Oaks free throws took it back. Carroll made one of two free throws for the tie with 29 seconds left, but that gave the Oaks possession with the shot clock turned off.

Menlo got standout performances from its beefy frontcourt of Henry Cornelious (20 points, 7 rebounds) and John Paine (18 points, 10 rebounds), and Testa finished with 17 points.

Tate Hoffman chipped in 14 points and six rebounds and Holmes had 11 points, six rebounds and five assists for SOU, which shot a season-low 43 percent (26-of-61) from the field.

The Raiders finish play on Menlo's home court at 2 p.m. Saturday with a matchup against 25th-ranked Westmont (Calif.).
