#15 SOU fights off Hope International, 93-87

SANTA CLARITA, Calif.Remi Mejia scored 13 of her 26 points in the first quarter but Southern Oregon had to survive Hope International's fourth-quarter charge to secure a 93-87 victory and hand the Royals their first loss of the season Friday at The Master's Classic.

In their sixth straight win, the 15th-ranked Raiders (6-0) led by as many as 15 points early and a Casey Williams bucket put them up 81-72 with five minutes left. The Royals (6-1) scored seven unanswered over the next minute and went ahead for the first time all afternoon, 86-85, on a Sarah Nunes jumper with 1:54 left to play.

The lead lasted 12 seconds; Toria Bradford got into the paint for the go-ahead layup, and after a defensive stop Kenadee Honaker found Destinee Jones inside for a basket that made it 89-86. The Royals got one free throw on the other end before perfect trips to the line for Bradford and Ariel Augustine put the game away.

Mejia finished 10-of-19 from the field, including 6-of-10 from downtown, for a new season-high point total after she established the old one with 21 in Wednesday's win at Linfield.

Bradford tallied 13 points on 5-of-7 shooting to go with four assists, four rebounds and three steals. Augustine had 16 points, Daranda Hinkey scored 11, and Williams went for 10 points and six boards.

The Raiders shot a season-high 48 percent from the field (37-of-77) and made 13 3-pointers, the most for the team in 15 games spanning back to last season. Honaker hit a couple off the bench and Syd'Nee Fryer added another in the closing minutes.

Center Emma Forel recorded 28 points on 14-of-23 shooting and 10 rebounds for the Royals. Nikki Andaya logged a double-double of another sort with 22 points and 10 assists.

The Raiders will be tested again Saturday against the hosts of the tournament, 18th-ranked The Master's (Calif.). Tipoff is scheduled for noon.
