SOU eliminated in penalty kicks by Warriors

SPRINGFIELD – The Southern Oregon women's soccer team's season was stopped in penalty kicks late Friday night, an excruciating end to a 1-1 draw against Corban in the quarterfinal round of the Cascade Conference Championships presented by U.S. Bank.

By converting four shots in the shootout to SOU's three, the fourth-seeded Warriors (10-6-2 overall) advanced to play sixth seeded Northwest (Wash.) in Saturday's semifinal at the Willamalane Sports Complex. Top-seeded Eastern Oregon will take on seventh-seeded College of Idaho for the right to the other spot in Monday's championship match.

The scenario was a familiar one for the Raiders, who wrapped up at 10-7-1. They've gone to penalty kicks in the first round of the tournament three of the last four seasons and were eliminated in one such game by Corban in 2014. The Warriors have advanced through all five postseason matchups between the teams.

SOU took a 1-0 lead in the 69th minute, when sophomore Aislinn Waite took a ball that deflected off a defender and deposited it for her third goal of the season.

Raider keeper Hannah Ceciliani made three of her four saves in the second half but couldn't stop Holly Moorman from scoring the equalizer in the 84th minute via a through-ball. Emma Kosmala and Annouscka Kordom were credited with assists on the play.

In the shootout, Waite converted SOU's first attempt and Ceciliani stopped Corban's first. The Warriors made their next four, however – Lexi McQueary, Macy Goodwin, Heidi Fronk and Nadine Correa connected in succession – and keeper Sheyenne Brusven gave them the advantage by stopping the Raiders' second and third tries.

In the fourth and fifth rounds, Mia Volpatti and Makena Totushek scored their kicks to keep the Raiders alive. Correa then delivered the decisive blow.

The game was the last for seniors Jacqueline Laird and Kelsey Randall, who in four years helped the Raiders go 36-32-7 and were part of the team's first-ever conference title in 2016.
