#21 Northwest rides hot attack to semifinals

KIRKLAND, Wash. – The Southern Oregon volleyball team's season came to an end Tuesday night with a 25-21, 25-18, 25-11 loss to 21st-ranked Northwest (Wash.) in the first round of the Cascade Conference Championships presented by U.S. Bank at NU Pavilion.

The match was dominated by Northwest outside hitter Amanda Waterman, who had 13 kills on 28 attacks, and middle Mattie Jo Johnson, who added 10 on 15 attempts. Waterman and Johnson had one error between them.

The Raiders had no answer, especially without the services of injured middle Makayla Hoyt, one of the top blockers in the CCC. As a team, the Eagles attacked .366 – the most efficient clip for an SOU opponent this season.

Northwest (22-7 overall), the No. 4 seed in the tournament, advanced to play top-seeded Corban in Friday's semifinal round, which is being hosted by the Warriors. Second-seeded College of Idaho will meet No. 3 seed Eastern Oregon in the other semifinal.

The Raiders, without a senior on the roster, finished the season 15-11 overall. At 12-8 in CCC play, they'd earned the No. 5 seed.

They got nine kills apiece from junior outside hitter Dani Johnson and sophomore right-side Taylor Ristvedt, but only mounted a .113 attack as the Eagles tallied eight blocks to SOU's three. Johnson assisted three of them and had one to herself.

Ashlynn Flynn led the Raiders with 17 digs, and Natalie James had 14 assists and seven digs.

The final four teams standing in the CCC are the same as in 2016.
