SOU gets Master's in 5 to split opening day of Summer Slam

FULLERTON, Calif. – Looking like a team in mid-August form, Southern Oregon was far from perfect but escaped the first day of the Summer Slam Invitational and 2017 season with a five-set win over The Master's (Calif.) Wednesday night at Hope International's Darling Pavilion.

Encouraging signs dotted SOU's 25-23, 25-22, 21-25, 20-25, 15-9 defeat of the Mustangs, including a 17-block performance led by its new and imposing front line. The block total was the highest in a match for the Raiders since 2014.

The nightcap victory, however, came on the heels of a morning-session loss to 14th-ranked Montana Tech in which the Raiders cruised in the first set (25-21) and dropped the next three (30-28, 25-19, 25-20) after giving up a 24-20 advantage in the second set. Dani Johnson, a junior transfer and starting outside hitter, put down 14 kills on 25 attacks in her Raider debut, and freshman middle Elliott Cook totaled nine kills and three blocks, but the rest of the team combined for 22 kills compared to 26 attacking errors.

Redshirt-sophomore right-side hitter Taylor Ristvedt helped them get redemption, matching a career-high with 15 kills and just two errors on 38 attacks along with seven blocks in the nightcap. Redshirt-freshman middle Makayla Hoyt shined, too, with nine blocks and eight kills on 19 attacks in her second collegiate match, while Cook went for nine kills and seven blocks.

After the Mustangs took the final five points of the fourth set to force a fifth, SOU raced out to a 9-2 lead in the decisive frame. Junior outside hitter Malie Rube, wearing a Raider uniform for the first time, helped them reclaim momentum with three of her 13 kills in the set. She added 11 digs.

Sharing setting duties, Hannah Bogatin and Natalie James recorded 21 assists apiece as the Raiders hit .173, and James had 11 digs. Libero Kylie Barcroft collected a match-high 21 digs in helping to keep the Mustangs at a .136 average.

In the fifth set, The Master's was forced into seven attacking errors while putting down only five kills. Johnson ended the match with her sixth kill.

SOU returns to the court at 8 a.m. Thursday for a match against Morningside (Iowa). After that, the Raiders will travel to Costa Mesa for a 2 p.m. date at Vanguard (Calif.).
