Volpatti strikes twice to lift SOU over UC Merced, 4-3

MERCED, Calif. – Southern Oregon's Mia Volpatti picked an opportune time to score the first two goals of her career, boosting the Raiders off the bench to a quality win in a 4-3 shootout at UC Merced on Saturday afternoon.

Volpatti, a redshirt-sophomore playing not far from her hometown of Livermore, Calif., punched in the go-ahead goal in the 63rd minute to break a 3-3 tie, getting an assist from Trinity Rhoades that marked the first point of the freshman's career. The Raiders kept the Bobcats quiet the rest of the way to improve to 2-1 on the season.

After falling behind on an Ashley Bennett goal in the 14th minute, the Raiders scored the next three unanswered: Kelsey Randall assisted Aislinn Waite in the 23rd minute, Misty Martinez scored unassisted in the 33rd, and Martinez assisted Volpatti to make it 3-1 in the 34th.

Merced (0-2-1) – the defending Cal Pac champion which took eighth-ranked Northwest (Wash.) to double-overtime to start the season – cut the deficit in half 18 seconds before halftime on a D Covarrubias score set up by Jennifer Salinger. The Bobcats tied it in the 53rd when Elizabeth Cruz-Gomez struck unassisted.

SOU hadn't won a game in which an opponent scored at least three goals since defeating Corban, 5-3, on Oct. 5, 2013.

Martinez's goal and assist were also the first points of her career.

The Raiders out-shot the Bobcats, 15-12. SOU keeper Hannah Ceciliani collected five saves.

SOU is back in action at 11 a.m. Monday at William Jessup in Rocklin, Calif.
